Tier 5 has the quarterbacks that have been in the league long enough that we know what they are and what they aren’t. These guys are tricky for teams to navigate because they are solid enough that you don’t want to move off of them, but they are limited in their ceiling which may not allow a team to make a deep playoff run. With these quarterbacks, we hold out hope that they could surprise us, but they just aren’t going to make that jump this season.

21. Brock Purdy - San Francisco 49ers

Typically, franchises love to feature their quarterback at the center of everything, but San Francisco hasn’t done that for years under Kyle Shanahan. Whether it is Jimmy Garappolo or Brock Purdy, the quarterback isn’t driving the team’s success in San Francisco. The reason the 49ers are making it to the Super Bowl is because of all the other guys you think of when you think about the 49ers before Brock Purdy. Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Trent Williams are all more valuable to the 49ers success than Brock Purdy at the quarterback position. He is a great system quarterback and that is ok, but don’t act like Brock Purdy could go to the lackluster Carolina Panthers and turn that team into a contender like the 49ers.

20. Baker Mayfield - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield has managed to have a career resurgence in Tampa Bay. Once Baker finally dropped the expectations and commercials and he was able to have a good season in Tampa. Last season he had 28 TDs and 10 Ints which was the best TD-to-Int ratio of his career along with over 4000 passing yards. With weapons like Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, he can be a very serviceable quarterback in the wide-open NFC South division. However, he isn’t going to elevate this team to a legitimate contender anytime soon.

19. Trevor Lawrence - Jacksonville Jaguars

When Trevor Lawrence was coming out of Clemson people were hyping him up as the quarterback messiah that was going to contend with Patrick Mahomes in several years. However, I was skeptical and said that I didn’t see him as special at all. After three years of Trevor Lawrence in the NFL, I still feel the same way. Last year, the Jaguars brought in Calvin Ridley and everyone expected a big breakout, and instead, he threw 21 TDs and 14 Ints with the Jags finishing with a pedestrian 9-8 record. This team will only regress in overall record as the other teams in the AFC South all on the rise. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that Trevor will make the jump in order to get the Jaguars over the hump this year, or in the future.
