In the NFL, the quarterback is the most important position by far. They can take your team from irrelevant to contender or vice versa. Without this position being filled by the right guy, a franchise has seemingly no hope for success. I have broken down and ranked every starting quarterback in the league and we start with the bottom-of-barrel quarterbacks in Tier 7. These franchises wish they had a better option at quarterback which will lead to them having a turbulent season.
32. Bryce Young - Carolina Panthers
The Panthers might very well be regretting selecting Bryce Young first overall in last year’s draft. Rarely do quarterbacks in the NFL have the type of season that Bryce Young had last year and still manage to turn their NFL career around. He was drafted with the hopes that his accuracy demonstrated at Alabama would make up for his small frame and underwhelming athleticism. However, his lackluster performances combined with his lack of offensive weapons, sent the Panthers into a tailspin last year landing them at an appalling 2-15 record. His outlook for this season doesn’t look any better as their best receivers are Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen, who would be at best, wide receiver threes on any other team. If Young has another 11 TD and 10 Int season, then expect the Panthers to dump him when they land another rookie quarterback high in the draft next offseason.
31. Gardner Minshew - Las Vegas Raiders
Similarly to Ryan Fitzpatrick, Minshew has the facial hair and the nickname, Minshew Mania, to be a great journeyman and backup quarterback. After filling in for Anthony Richardson for most of the season last year, Minshew is posed to become the starter in Las Vegas. Las Vegas is depleted on weapons outside of Devante Adams, and they will be playing in a tough AFC West Division. Minshew went for 15 TDs and 9 Ints last season which won’t be good enough considering essentially every position on the offense will be a downgrade from what he had last year in Indianapolis. He is a great backup to have on a team, but he is not starting caliber.
30. Daniel Jones - New York Giants
The Giants choosing Daniel Jones over Saquon Barkley is going to haunt the Giants faithful all of this season. Without the threat of an explosive running back, pass rushers will be chomping at the bit to get to Daniel Jones in the backfield. Last year he only played 6 games and threw for 2 TDs and 6 Ints with an average of 150 passing yards a game. With the Giants drafting Malik Nambers in the first round, Jones will have some improved receiver help, but this is Daniel Jones’ last year to prove he is worthy of starting for an NFL franchise.
29. Bo Nix - Denver Broncos
Bo Nix is the first rookie to enter this list and is one of the few rookies who will actually get to start week one out of the 6 quarterbacks taken in the first round. I do believe in Bo Nix as he lit up the Pac-12 while at Oregon throwing for 45 TDs and only 3 Ints which shows his ability to take care of the ball and still be an effective quarterback. Now he is entering into a situation with the Broncos that may make it hard for him to have initial success, but he will only continue to rise in these rankings over the next few years.
28. Sam Darnold - Minnesota Vikings
Most NFL fans feel similar about Sam Darnold as they do Daniel Jones. Sam Darnold was selected high in the draft to a New York team that had been struggling at the quarterback position and with that opportunity, he didn’t do much to improve the state of the franchise like Daniel Jones. However, the pieces around him on those Jets teams were awful and I’m still a believer that Darnold can have a career turnaround. With the offensive pieces that Minnesota has at its disposal this season, Darnold needs to make significant improvements like Baker Mayfield did in Tampa Bay, or else he will be confined to a backup role for the rest of his NFL career.
27. Will Levis - Tennessee Titans
Will Levis is in an interesting spot on this list because he isn’t with more of the young dynamic quarterbacks in the league. He will get every chance this season to prove that he is the future of the Titans as they have completely shifted their identity away from Derrick Henry and the power running game to an air raid offense. He could quickly work his way up the rankings if the Titans go on to shock teams in the AFC South, but given what was seen of him last season, Levis is too inconsistent to be a franchise quarterback.
