1.Josh Allen (Previously #2)
Josh Allen is the entire Bills team. He has the best QBR in the league with 0 interceptions and has scored 9 total touchdowns. Despite losing his best wide receiver this offseason, Allen has actually played better because he is now able to spread the ball around more. Although he had an ugly performance against the Ravens, it’s tough to play like Superman every game. He should be an MVP candidate at the end of the season, but the overall Bills roster might limit Josh Allen’s ability to have a deep playoff run.
2.Patrick Mahomes (Previously #1)
Patrick Mahomes has not had the hottest of statical starts to the season with already 5 interceptions thrown this year through 4 games. However, he has managed to get the Chiefs off to a 4-0 start. Now with the Chiefs losing their main offensive target, Rashee Rice, to injury, Mahomes will once again have to be Brady-like in order to continue winning games with no notable receivers at his disposal.
3.Lamar Jackson (Previously #3)
Lamar Jackson continues to prove why being a dynamic quarterback in this league can be so beneficial to an offense, and a team. Lamar has accumulated over 850 passing yards, 300 rushing, and 7 total touchdowns. With the addition of Derrick Henry, this Ravens' rushing attack is wildly efficient and physical, making it really tough for opposing defenses to stop. I’d love to see Lamar get Zay Flowers more involved in the offense and push the ball a bit more downfield as opposed to checking the ball down to Justice Hill as much.
4.C.J. Stroud (Previously #5)
C.J. Stroud has had a few uncharacteristic mistakes to start the season, but it looks like the Texans are starting to find their stride. With a load of new weapons, Stroud has been able to throw for over 1000 yards, 6 TDs, and 2 Ints. With Stroud at the helm, the Texans look like the clear favorite to dominate the AFC South and potentially make a big playoff run.
5.Joe Burrow (Previously #4)
Joe Burrow's start to the season is the complete opposite of Mahomes. Statistically with 978 passing yards, 7 TDs, and only 1 Int, you’d think the Bengals would be rolling early. However, nothing could be further from the truth. This Bengals defense has been awful and Joe Burrow and the offense haven’t been able to have success when the game is in the balance. If the Bengals continue to struggle to win games, Burrow could find himself lower on this list.
6.Jayden Daniels (Previously #17)
I have never been more in love with a rookie quarterback than I have been with Jayden Daniels. His completion percentage combined with his ability to take off and run has allowed this Commanders offense to become one of the best in the NFL. Without Jayden Daniels, this offense wouldn’t be able to produce even a third of what it has been with him. I’m so excited to see if the Commanders can continue surprising the league with their success with Jayden Daniels being the catalyst for this offense.
7.Jared Goff (Previously #7)
Jared Goff is coming off an electric performance on Monday Night Football where he completed 100% of his passes in the win. Jared Goff is the beneficiary of a tremendous run game in Detroit, and his efficiency when throwing the football is making this offense extra dangerous. Through 4 games, Goff has thrown for over 1000 yards, 5 TDs, and 4 Ints. He has even notched a receiving TD, which was thrown by Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff does need to limit the turnovers, but as long as he can do that, this offense will continue to be explosive with Goff running the show.
8.Sam Darnold (Previously #28)
When I did my original quarterback ranking, I stated that I was a Sam Darnold believer and that he could resurrect his career in Minnesota, but I didn’t see this coming. With his tremendous early season success in Minnesota, he is now being anointed as an MVP candidate. Through 4 games Darnold has thrown for 932 yards, 11 TDs, and 3 Ints. With a great selection of weapons and an offensive-minded head coach helping Darnold, he has completely changed his career outlook in a matter of a few games.
9.Baker Mayfield (Previously #20)
Let Baker Bake! Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold have put the league on notice as the two highly drafted prospects have finally found their rhythm after going through a number of franchises. With a pass-happy offense in Tampa Bay, Baker Mayfield has fit right in as he has been allowed to sling the ball and he’s done so with confidence. With Baker throwing for almost 1000 yards, 8 TDs, and only 2 Ints, Baker is looking to make the Buccaneers contenders in the NFC South.
10.Dak Prescott (Previously #12)
Dak Prescott is the only reason this Cowboys team isn’t a complete disaster. This team is so top-heavy that if the top players don’t play outstanding every single game then the team can’t win. Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb are the only reason that this team has 2 wins on the season. The Cowboys defense can’t stop anyone right now and it will require Dak Prescott to put up outstanding numbers just to keep pace in each game.
11.Jordan Love (Previously #8)
I am a believer that Jordan Love can easily make his way back into the top 10, but in the games he has played this season, he has already thrown already 4 interceptions. Now the Packers are gonna let Love sling the ball downfield and the Packers should make a resurgence once Love is a little more healthy off of the injury he suffered in week 1. With Love in command of the offense for the rest of the season, he should put the Packers in a spot to compete for the NFC crown this season.
12.Brock Purdy (Previously #21)
With the San Francisco 49ers, it is very hard to evaluate whether or not Brock Purdy is succeeding to the extent that he is solely because of the team and the coach, or if Brock Purdy is really an elite quarterback. The stats would suggest that Purdy is one of the best quarterbacks in the league with 1130 yards, 5 TDs, and 2 Ints. However, we cannot deny that Kyle Shanahan has created an amazing offensive system that takes a lot of the burden off of Brock Purdy at the quarterback position.
13.Matthew Stafford (Previously #9)
It is stunning that Matthew Stafford has been able to perform as well as he has without his two best receivers, Cooper Kupp and Puka Nucua for most of the season. Stafford has still managed to put up almost 1000 passing yards, 2 TDs, and 2 Ints to start this season. I wish that Stafford and the Rams would win more games to start the season, but it is commendable that they were able to beat Purdy and the 49ers in week 3.
14.Kyler Murray (Previously #16)
Kyler Murray has finally started to take some strides toward becoming the quarterback that people hoped he could become. To start the season, Kyler has thrown for 777 yards, 6 TDs, and only 1 Int. The Cardinals have managed to hang in with tough teams like the Lions and the Bills, but they came up short in both of the matchups. If Kyler and the Cardinals can finally start winning those games, then he will find himself higher on this list.
15.Aaron Rodgers (Previously #10)
Aaron Rodgers and this Jets offense is going to take time to get going. Now Rodgers hasn’t done enough to win games consistently for the Jets. This starts with not getting the ball enough to Garrett Wilson. Rodgers should rise on this list by the midpoint of the season, but if Rodgers and Robert Saleh continue to be at odds with one another, this situation could get ugly fast.
16.Justin Fields (Previously #N/A)
Originally, Russell Wilson was slated to start for the Steelers and I was calling for Fields to start because of the dynamic capabilities he has at the quarterback position. If I had ranked him in my preseason ranking, he would’ve been around position #21. Fields has done exactly what was expected of him in Pittsburgh. The most impressive thing about Fields is that he is so accurate with the football, with a 70% completion percentage to start the season. If he continues to play the way he has been, he should only continue to ascend in these rankings.
17.Justin Herbert (Previously: #6)
I was really hoping that with a dynamic rushing attack, thanks to Jim Harbaugh’s offensive style, Justin Herbert would be extremely efficient as a passer. Thus far this season, he hasn’t lived up to those expectations. Maybe his lack of efficiency can be attributed to his poor receiver talent. Regardless, you can’t score 10 points in each of the past 2 weeks and expect to win games consistently.
18.Jalen Hurts (Previously: #11)
My concerns about this Eagles offense have been realized. There were rumblings before the season started that Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts were at odds with one another, and this turmoil from last season has carried over to this season. This Eagles offense is being carried by the efforts of Saquon Barkley and not Jalen Hurts. It is clear that Hurts can’t operate with Nick Sirianni calling the shots. The Eagles will continue to struggle if their coach and quarterback aren’t on the same page.
19.Kirk Cousins (Previously: #14)
I think people expected more when they heard that Kirk Cousins was coming to save the Atlanta Falcons from the likes of Desmond Ridder. Through 4 games he has thrown for 864 yards, 4 TDs, and 4 Ints. With Bijan Robinson and the ground game having such tremendous success I would hope that Kirk would be more efficient as a passer. I will give him major props for how he led the Falcons during their game-winning drive last week against the Saints. If the Falcons start to take off as they enter into a few NFC South matchups, then Kirk could find himself rising in this list quickly.
20.Geno Smith (Previously: #22)
Geno Smith and the Seahawks are 3-1 on the season, but the moment they had to face a real contender, they folded against the Lions. The Seahawks' next few matchups will finally see Geno Smith face some tough defenses so we can finally get a little more clarity on how sustainable his success is. With a ton of weapons at his disposal, I expect Geno to put up good numbers each week, but he can’t continue to turn the ball over at the rate that he is.
21.Derek Carr (Previously: #25)
Are the Saints frauds or contenders? I am inclined to think that they are frauds. Derek Carr’s early season success came off a lot of checkdowns to Kamara and a few deep shots to Rashid Shaheed. However, after dropping two games straight, I am worried that their offensive style isn’t consistent enough to win sustainably.
22.Anthony Richardson (Previously: #15)
Very similar to Derek Carr, Anthony Richardson has been over-reliant on the deep shots down the field. Additionally, his accuracy is being called into question as he has already thrown 6 interceptions this season. If he plays up to his potential, he can be a wildly dynamic quarterback. However, currently, we might have to wait a while before we see a breakout from Anthony Richardson.
23.Caleb Williams (Previously: #18)
This most recent game from Caleb Williams was by far his best. He finally was willing to sit in the pocket and take the easy completions that allowed the Bears to win the game. However, the other three games that proceeded this most recent one has given me reason for concern. He hasn’t been able to hit the deep pass or be accurate enough, especially given the receivers at his disposal. If he can settle down, and play as an efficient quarterback, the Bears can have success this season.
24.Trevor Lawrence (Previously: #19)
The Jaguars are quickly learning that paying Trevor Lawrence before he won anything meaningful was probably not a good idea. I was skeptical of Lawrence entering the season, and now that the Jaguars are 0-4, I think it should be time to hit the panic button in Jacksonville. Their offense hasn’t scored more than 20 points all season, and that is on Trevor Lawrence. He is barely completing more than 50% of his passes, and that simply won’t be good enough for an offense that depends on their air attack.
25.Tua Tagovailoa (Previously: #13)
Poor Tua can not catch a break. He has been concussed so many times that he should honestly retire. In the last game that he did play against the Bills, he looked really ugly throwing the ball. In that game, he couldn’t throw it with accuracy, and on top of that he threw 3 interceptions. Now with Tua not slated to come back for a while, he could look even worse once he does return to the field for the Dolphins given his previous head injuries.
Through 4 weeks, we have seen both the best and worst of Bo Nix this season. Last week, he really struggled against the Jets as he only threw for 60 yards, which mostly came on just two passes. However, we’ve also seen brilliance from Nix, like when he faced the Buccaneers. If Bo Nix can become more consistent in Sean Payton’s offense, he can easily rise in the rankings.
27.Andy Dalton (Previously: #N/A)
Andy Dalton has been a breath of fresh air to the Carolina Panthers. Now we can’t overreact to how well Dalton has played to start the season. If the Red Rifle can return to his old self, he can resurrect his career in Carolina like many other quarterbacks have done this season. The NFC South is full of opportunity, and Andy Dalton will have the chance to secure a long-term job with the Panthers if he continues to play the way he has been.
28.Deshaun Watson (Previously: #23)
How the Browns are 1-3 is crazy. This Browns defense is really good. However, this offense led by Deshaun Watson is one of the worst in the league. It is clear that Deshaun Watson is nowhere close to the quarterback he used to be. With the Cleveland offense scoring 18 points or less in each game this season, don’t be surprised if the Browns bail on Watson mid-season.
29.Jacoby Brissett (Previously: #26)
Brissett hasn’t been able to throw for over 200 yards in a game this season. This offense is struggling, but it isn’t all on the shoulders of Jacoby Brissett. He is a leader in the locker room and that quality alone gives him an edge over a decent number of quarterbacks on this list. It is clear that Brissett is a backup quarterback, but that is exactly what the Patriots need right now as Drake Maye needs to continue to develop in practice.
30.Daniel Jones (Previously: #30)
Daniel Jones is fighting for his NFL life right now. Everyone in the city of New York is livid as they watch their division rival, the Washington Commanders, with Jayden Daniels, become a rookie sensation. Every Giants fan wishes they had replaced Daniel Jones this past offseason, but instead, they stuck with Daniel Jones and let Saquon Barkley go. Now with Saquon gone, the offense has been Daniel Jones-dependent, and as a result, the Giants are 1-3.
31.Gardner Minshew (Previously: #31)
The Raiders have been extremely up and down this season. This inconsistency is symbolic of the quarterback they have running the operation. Gardner Minshew at times can be good, but at the same time can also be the reason they lose the game. I have been very tough on Minshew because he has been given a lot of opportunities to succeed this season, but he hasn’t been good when you expect him to, and at the same time he has been good when you least expect him to.
32.Will Levis (Previously: #27)
Every week, Will Levis gives the Titans another reason why he shouldn’t be their starting quarterback. He has thrown 6 interceptions this year and they always seem to come in the moments of the game that you simply just can’t give the ball away. These turnovers are also just so boneheaded that I’m sure it has every Titans fan pulling out their hair. He reminds me a lot of Zack Wilson with the Jets a few years ago.
33.Bryce Young (Previously: #32)
I didn’t think that Bryce Young could get any lower than when I ranked him #32 in the preseason ranking, however, he has seemingly done the impossible. In the 2 games he played, prior to getting benched for Andy Dalton, he threw for only 245 yards, 0 TDs, and 3 Ints. His confidence is completely shot. He is the latest victim of getting started too early for a team with a depleted roster. The only thing left for Bryce Young is to get traded to a different team and be put in a different situation.
