Week 1 of the NFL season ended with an exciting Monday Night Football Matchup between the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers. It would be the 49ers that would prevail at home against Aaron Rodgers and the Jets to open up the season. Prior to the game, news broke that Christian McCaffrey would not be playing in the opener as he was sidelined with a calf injury. However, this would not slow down the 49ers offense as this would be the Jordan Mason breakout game. So what are the takeaways for these two Super Bowl contending teams?
No McCaffrey, No Problem
This 49ers offense picked up right where they left off from last season. Despite not having one of the most dynamic running backs in the league, they were still able to run the ball with tremendous efficiency with Jordan Mason. The undrafted free agent from Georgia Tech running behind the 49ers' vaunted offensive line put up 147 yards and 1 rushing TD in the victory. Now missing Christian McCaffrey will be tough for this 49ers squad, but they are well-equipped to handle this loss if he misses multiple weeks.
Aaron Rodgers and This Jets Offense Will Take Time
People expecting Aaron Rodgers and this offense to take off right away are delusional. Aaron Rodgers hasn't played more than a handful of meaningful snaps in 2 years! Make no mistake that Aaron Rodgers and this offense will be effective this season, but to open with the 49ers against that defense is brutal for any quarterback to face. Something else that was noticed was Aaron Rodgers' frantic nature in the pocket despite not being pressured at times. We can't forget that he was severely injured last year and this will lead to him playing a little extra careful to not get hit. This extra carefulness is acting like a PTSD effect for Aaron Rodgers.
This Jets Defense Got Run Over
Entering this season, this defense was hyped as a stout unit that would complement the Aaron Rodgers led offense. However, this defense all night got outmuscled up front by the 49ers. Jordan Mason and this 49ers offense were able to put up 180 rushing yards on the Jets. If the Jets expect to make a deep playoff run this season, then they need to make sure they can stop the run first against opposing offenses moving forward.
